In the east, the Germans had lost half a million men in the freezing cold of the Soviet winter and in North Africa the British Eighth Army had taken Tripoli and Tunis. By the beginning of May 1943, the war in North Africa was won. Since the outbreak of war, many things had happened to Arthur to lead him to this moment, but his fate was now sealed. What followed over the next two years would live with him forever. Early one morning, the ‘rebels’ were once again crammed into a train carriage and taken south.

At the end of the first paragraph, Arthur stopped abruptly. The man’s wife had just given birth, yet her husband had been away for what was now the best part of three years. Arthur had to think quickly. What should he do? He pretended he was struggling with the handwriting when in fact he struggled with the dilemma before him.
