Simply put, apologetics means loving people enough to give them reasonable and compelling answers to their honest questions. While some no doubt do act this way, it's not because they are Christians; there are plenty of people in other religions (and even atheists) who have the same attitude -- such as the guy who throws together a site titled "10001 Bible Contradictions" and uses nothing but Ingersoll as a source.
Again, as with all the qualities of God, this fact is unavoidable. Jesus provided his followers with two great commandments. It is the mark of any false system of science or religion that it cannot bear the light of research or investigation. Last week we posted an article about Yancey’s upcoming speaking engagement with the “Gay Christian Network.” Roger Oakland addresses some of Yancey’s views in Faith Undone (p. 215): In 2004, Philip Yancey accepted an interview with Candace Chellew-Hodge for Whosoever, “an online magazine for Gay, Lesbian, Bi-Sexual, and Transgendered Christians.” When Chellew-Hodge asked Yancey about his views on gays and lesbians in the church, Yancey answered: When it gets to particular matters of policy, like ordaining gay and lesbian ministers, I’m confused, like a lot of people.
Rational Evidence is a line of evidence that is primarily used in Classical apologetics but does show up in Evidential Apologetics. On the other hand, if a person has at least some idea about the challenges coming from all kinds of errant movements, then he will be better able to face them when such an occasion comes. It did not mean “a regretful acknowledgement of an offence or failure” (the Oxford English Dictionary definition of ’apology’) but a carefully reasoned defence of one’s beliefs or actions.
